sketchbooks
Sketchbooks are an important part of growing your skills and expanding creativity. In Visual Art 120, there are three categories for sketchbook assignments. There will be one of each due per month.
- Observational drawing (drawing something you see that is in front of you)
- Visual journaling
- Art history layouts (see list of artists to choose from)
observational drawing
Find an object, person or place to draw. Look carefully. Try to focus, first on proportion and edges and gradually start working toward textures and then light and shadow.
Visual Journaling
Visual Journaling is a very creative and free way to explore ideas and materials in a visual way. You may be surprised by the results you get if you really dive in. Spend a bit of time learning about what visual journals look like.

Art History Layouts
Each month you will choose one artist from the list provided and create a sketchbook layout inspired by this artist. You may print and collage examples or their work, paint, draw and decorate around them. Your layout should include some information about their life and work as well as your own thoughts and opinions about their work (this is almost more important). Your layout should reflect the work and style of the artist you chose.
